Rongai Route

Overview

It approaches the mountain from the Norteastern side and crosses Amboseli Plains then goes between the Uhuru peak and Mawenzi peak before finding its way to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

It is considered the easiest camping route with very little crowd. It is also the best route to be taken during rainfall season.

It descends through the Marangu route.

The Rongai route can be done in six days, but a seventh day is important for additional acclimatization period.

Itinerary

Day 0

Arriving & Pick up

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged hotel in Moshi town. After some few hours of resting a pre-climb briefing will be conducted by your guide by going through the itinerary then followed by gear check.

Day 1

Nalemoru  to Simba Camp

After a drive to the gate and complete entrance permission, the first trails goes through Nale Moru village. The small winding path crosses maize fields before entering pine forest, and then climbs gently through a forest. The day is covered by a gently hiking slope through a beautiful view of the countryside plateaus with possible coming across of colobus monkey, elephants or buffaloes. Today's destination is set to Simba camp.

Day 2

Simba Camp  to 2nd Cave Camp

The morning hike is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave Camp located at the start of the moorland zone with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.Steady hike up to the second Cave Camp located at moorland plateaus. Kibo peak and Eastern ice fields on the crater rim are easily viewed from this location

Ovenight : Simba Camp(3500m) 

Day 3

Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Leaving the pine forest behind, we carry on with a steady ascent walking though moorland. There are superb views of the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim of Kibo, the highest of the three volcanoes which form the mountain. We will leave the main trail and strike out across moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, the second of Kilimanjaro's volcanoes. We will set up camp today in the sheltered valley near Kikelewa caves at 3630m. On this day, the trek corsses through a moorland with steady walk. The view of ice fileds on the crater rim of highest peak, Kibo, continues to be seen superb. Then the trek leave the main  trail and goes through a smaller path towads the jagged of Mawenzi peaks. Kikelewa caves will be a destination beneath the shelltered valley

Day 4

Kikelewa Camp  to Mawenzi Tarn Hut

A steep climb which is short but also offers a beautiful view of plains to the northern side. The vegetation region marks it ends and the trek set set its destination at Mawenzi tarn just below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi. Acclamation can be done with a simple walks arounds the place.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut

A trek goes through a lunar desert between Mawenzi and Kibo until it reaches Kibo huts for a day resting while gathering enough energy to finish the trail up to summit in the next couple of hours.

Day 6

Kibo Hut  to UHURU PEAK  to Horombo Hut

Today's climb is expected to be tough and long, a trek will resume on the around midnight hours and going upwards passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5200m. The spot is good for taking a rest. It proceed upwards until sunrise and reaches the cretor rim at Gilman's Point at 5681m. The feeling of warm come across the place and the cold goes down gradually. In the couple of minutes a trek reaches its peak at Uhuru 5895m.A trek reverse it coarse to Kibo Hut. Soon after lunch a trek heads to Horombo Hut for overnight.

Distance covered: 6km / 3.7mi upwards || 21 km / 13mi downwardsApprox. time taken: 8 hours upwards || 6 hours downwards

Day 7

Horombo Hut  to Marangu Gate

A last gently walk of the trek through rainforest to  to Marangu Gate, giving farewell to the crew and transfer to hotel for ovenight stay.

Overnight : Hotel/Lodge in Moshi Town
