8 Day Lemosho Route

Overview:

This route starts off from the western

side of the mountain.


Lemosho route can take from 7 to 9 days,

preferably minimum 8 days.

This means additional time for better acclimatization thus higher the summit

success rate.

Lemosho joins the Machame route after Shira 2 Camp, follows the western circuit trail and descends to Mueka Gate.

Itinerary

Arrival Day

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged hotel in Moshi town. After a refreshing rest, a briefing will be conducted by your guide on itinerary details. Shortly after, gear will be thoroughly checked by your guide. If missing or inappropriate gear, rental can be done on the spot the same day.

Overnight: Hotel/Lodge in Moshi Town

 

Day 1            

Lemosho  to Forest Camp 

We’ll drive from Moshi town to Lemosho gate where from we start our trek through the rainforest. It’s most likely to listen to the singing of exotic birds and to see Colobus monkeys hanging from the trees. The trail leads to the forest camp famously known as "Mti Mkubwa" which means "Big Tree" for overnight camping.

Trekking Time : 3 - 4 hours.

Distance : 7km / 4.3mi

Overnight : Forest Camp(2750m) 

Day 2            

Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Today’s trail is moderately steep, heading to a heather zone, crossing a vast moorland plateau up to the edge of Shira Plateau. After reaching Shira 1 Camp, Kibo peak is expected to be seen which is likely to be covered by white less dense clouds around.

Trekking Time : 6 - 7 hours

Distance : 8.5km / 5.3mi

Overnight : Shira 1 Camp (3500m)  

Day 3                 

Shira 1 Camp  to  Shira 2 Camp

Today you will enjoy a superb view of lush heath enriching the moorland on the way to the Savanna desert. The Northern Ice fields are also visible on the way to Shira 2 where we’ll camp for the night. It’s advisable to take a short walk in the evening round the camp, to enhance your acclimatization state. Trekking time : 5 hours

iOvernight : Shira 2 Camp (3900m) 

Day 4                

Shira 2 Camp to Baranco (Acclimatization day)

The trail takes you to the South East towards Lava Tower also called the “Shark’s Tooth.” We’ll enjoy our lunch here and, right after lunch, we continue to the great Barranco valley. Spectacular shining glaciers, towering cliffs and gorgeous valleys complete a formidable picture.

Trekking time: 4-6 hours

Distance : 8km / 5mi

Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,950M)

 Day 5                

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Trek starts at the bottom of the Great Barranco where gorgeous views of waterfalls are seen. Trek continues up to the Great Barranco Wall famously known as "Breakfast Wall." It is an exhausting climb passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers and from there to Karanga valley and Karanga Camp.   A further walk can be done up to 4200m elevation for  acclimatization enhancement.

Overnight : Karanga Camp (3970) 

 Day 6                

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Our destination today is Barafu Camp at 4.600m elevation. The Camp is set on an exposed flat ridge with no vegetation around at all wherefrom you’ll start your summit attempt at midnight.  It’s a tough steep ascent which becomes even more difficult due to the high altitude and the low temperature. Keep yourself hydrated and warm!

Distance: 3km / 1.9mi

Overnight: Barafu Camp(4600m) 

Day 7              

Barafu Camp to UHURU PEAK to Mweka Camp

After six hours of trekking steadily towards summit glaciers, you'll reach Stela Point(5739m) near the crater rim. The first rays of sun are falling on your face!  Ice cliffs surround this place. After a couple of minutes, you will reach the peak of Kilimanjaro, UHURU PEAK, then descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch and head to Mweka camp for overnight. CONGRATS, YOU’VE DONE IT!

Trekking Time : 13hours – 15hours

Distance : 16.4km / 9.6mi

Overnight : Mweka Camp (3100m)  

Day 8                          

 Trek from MWEKA camp to MWEKA gate.             

 A last trek through rainforest to  to Mweka Gate, giving farewell to the crew and transfer to hotel for ovenight stay.

Trekking Time: 6 hours

Distance: 9.1km / 7.5miles

Overnight: Hotel/Lodge in Moshi Town
